India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami won the best international cricketer award in the second edition of the NAMAN organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The award ceremony, featured winners from both 2020 to 2022 and the newly crowned winners of 2023, who will all be honored with their respective awards.
Mohammed Shami has been the backbone of India’s pace in the past few years and successfully complemented Jasprit Bumrah in the team. In the ICC World Cup 2023, Mohammed Shami single-handedly decimated dangerous batting orders of the world and played a crucial role in taking India to the finals.
In One Day International cricket, Mohammed Shami has wonderful numbers as the pacer clinched 195 wickets in 100 innings with best performance of 7/57. The Indian pacer bowled with an economy of 5.55 in 50-over cricket. In T20 internationals, the economy of Mohammed Shami rose to 8.94 as he clinched 24 wickets in 23 innings. The personal best of Mohammed Shami in T20Is is 3/15.
The Test cricket statistics of Mohammed Shami are the testimony of his illustrious career as he clinched 229 wickets in just 122 innings with the best performance of 6/56. Mohammed Shami’s economy in Test cricket has been as low as 3.31.
Shadows to Stardom
Mohammed Shami hails from Uttar Pradesh, however, he represented Bengal in first-class cricket. Despite having participated in only 15 first-class and 15 List-A matches, he earned a spot in India’s ODI squad to face Pakistan in Delhi in January 2013.
Apart from the dangerous injuries he received in his career, Mohammed Shami also dealt with a personal crisis which threatened to derail his life. But, the soft-spoken pacer showed no signs of weakness and kept working on his craft to become one of the most fearful pacers in the world today.
In ICC World Cup 2023, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma used him very strategically to trap the opposing team and the pacer also delivered what was expected of him.
