The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 18 March held one more core committee meetings at the party headquarters to deliberate on potential candidates for various states for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Haryana, Odisha, Sikkim, Maharashtra and Gujarat were discussed in the core committee meeting. 

Here are 10 points to know 

1. The first state that was discussed in the meeting is Uttar Pradesh and was held in presence of CM Adityanath, Deputy CMs and state president. Citing sources, news agency ANI has reported that 25 Lok Sabha seats were discussed in the state. They also added that NDA partner Apna Dal may get 2 seats to contest, one from Mirzapur and the other from Sonbhadra. In addition to this, Ghaziabad MP General VK Singh likely to be fielded again from his constituency, however, the party may drop its Barabanki candidate seat.

2. In the second phase, the core meeting discussed Haryana state at the party headquaters and discussions on how to strategize were held. The Hindi heartland state of Rajasthan, where the BJP recently took power was also discussed. Sources added that discussion on the remaining 10 Lok Sabha seats were held. 

3. In West Bengal core meeting which was held to discuss candidates for the remaining 23 Lok Sabha seats in the state. On discussion on Odisha candidates, election management was discussed yesterday. The core committee meeting will be held today again to deliberate extensively on Odisha. “In today’s meeting, the election management was discussed. There will be another detailed meeting tomorrow. Today, other states were discussed. There will be a broad discussion on Odisha tomorrow,” Odisha BJP president Man Mohan Samal told ANI after the meeting.

4. Sources added that the central election meeting will be held tomorrow i.e. on 20 March. 

5. A major update is coming from Maharshtra as reports have stated that Raj Thackeray-led MNS is likely to join the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP Mahayuti alliance in the state. Thackeray reached Delhi late at night on Monday and is expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon. He said, “I don’t know what my schedule is yet. I was just told to come to Delhi. Let’s see,” as quoted by ANI.

6. Till now, the BJP has announced the list of 267 candidates for the upcoming polls. On 2 March, the party released list of 195 candidates. In the first listr, BJP fielded 34 Central government ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will again fight the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Varanasi constituency.

7. On 14 March, BJP released list of 72 candidates with some prominent BJP leaders featured in the second list included Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal, former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal, former Karnataka CM Basavraj Bommai. 

8. The Party has said that it will this time it will cross 400 seats. Recently, News18 opinion poll stated that the party might win 411 seats seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. As per the TN-ETG Research survey, the NDA is likely to win 358-398 seats, while I.N.D.I.A might gain about 110 to 130 while India TV-CNX opinion poll predicted 378 seats win for the party. 

9. In the seven-phase general elections held between April 11 and May 19, 2019, the BJP won 303 seats with a record 37.36 per cent vote share, the highest vote share by a political party since the 1989 general election. Overall, the BJP-led NDA won 353 seats. The Congress won 52 seats while the United Progressive Alliance won 91 seats in the election.

10. The general election for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases from April 19. The polling will be held in seven phases starting from April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20 and June 1 and the counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.
